What Is The Caltech Campus Like?
Located on a serene 124-acre campus in Pasadena, just outside the chaos of downtown LA, Caltech is far from the party-central reputation of other SoCal schools. It’s much more about the beauty of olive trees, lily ponds, and Spanish mission-style buildings than anything remotely related to Hollywood glitz. Sure, you’re close enough to enjoy LA’s offerings, but at Caltech, it’s all about brainpower over beach parties.
How Challenging Are Caltech’s Academics?
Founded in 1891, Caltech has always been a hub for world-changing scientists, and its rigorous core curriculum is built to produce more of the same. Expect a lot of physics, chemistry, math, and biology in your first few years. Plus, you’ll take a mix of humanities and social science courses, though let’s be honest, many students would rather take a pass on them if they could. Fortunately, the freshman-year grading system is pass/fail, making it a little easier to get used to the intense academic pressure. And when it comes to cheating? It’s a no-go, thanks to the school’s honor code, which means if someone’s caught trying to pull a fast one, it’s up to the students to decide if the rules were broken.
Academically speaking, Caltech is known for its top-tier programs in physics, computer science, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, bioengineering, and more. The school is all about cutting-edge research, and 90% of undergrads participate in research projects, with 80% getting Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowships (SURFs) to help them dive into their own discoveries. Many students even end up publishing papers in scientific journals before they graduate—no big deal, right?
How Are The Humanities At Caltech?
But it’s not just about the science and math nerds. The humanities and social science professors at Caltech are praised for being genuinely interested in teaching, as opposed to the more research-focused staff in other departments. While you’ll definitely encounter some dry, theory-heavy coursework, the academic vibe is collaborative, with students working together to solve some of the world’s most complex problems.
What Are The Housing And Social Scene Like At Caltech?
The social scene at Caltech? Well, let’s just say it’s not exactly a non-stop party. There are no fraternities or sororities, but Caltech has its own thing going with 8 co-ed “houses” that foster a sense of community and provide a much-needed social outlet in the midst of all the studying. Every year, there are interhouse parties—at least eight of them, plus a variety of low-key campus events and hangouts. And then there’s the annual Ditch Day, a bizarre tradition where underclassmen solve puzzles and take part in wild, senior-planned adventures, with no classes or deadlines in sight. “It’s a day of nerdiness,” says one sophomore.
When it comes to off-campus fun, students don’t have to go far to find things to do in nearby Old Pasadena or Los Angeles, which is easily accessible by metro. But even though they have the option of Disneyland or the beach, many Caltech students are more than content to stay on campus and create their own weird and wonderful fun. Case in point: The Pumpkin Drop on Halloween, where students drop a liquid-nitrogen-dipped pumpkin from the roof of the library and watch it shatter into a million icy pieces. Oh, and don’t forget the pranksters: one of Caltech’s most legendary pranks involved taking over the Rose Bowl scoreboard and replacing the scores with images of Caltech’s mascot (a beaver), all while trouncing MIT.
What Are The Athletics At Caltech Like?
As for athletics, Caltech isn’t exactly a sports powerhouse, though it does have a strong showing in Division III teams like tennis, swimming, and cross-country. There are also intramural competitions between the houses, plus a design competition where students build robots to complete obstacle courses.
At the end of the day, Caltech isn’t for the faint of heart. The workload is intense, and the social life is pretty chill (if you’re lucky, you might get an invitation to a house party). But for those who thrive on academic challenges and a strong sense of community, Caltech offers an environment where you’re trusted to think for yourself, get hands-on with world-class research, and maybe even change the world along the way.
