It’s a full-fledged research university with nine schools and colleges, and it spans three campuses: the main Chestnut Hill campus (aka “The Heights”), a campus across the street in Brighton, and a third in Newton. The Gothic Revival architecture at the Heights looks like something out of Harry Potter, but with modern additions (like a shiny new dorm and recreation center) that keep it fresh. There’s plenty of green space, including a peaceful reservoir perfect for jogging or just chilling out, and a $300 million science center. So, yeah, BC is pretty sweet.
Founded by the Jesuits in 1863, Boston College has always been about educating students to be “skilled, knowledgeable, and responsible leaders.” That mission is reflected in its Core Curriculum, which requires students to take courses in everything from philosophy and theology to social science, literature, and the arts. While about 70% of students are Catholic, the school is home to people from all walks of life, and there’s a deep sense of community and compassion across campus. The dorms are spacious and comfy, and while the dining hall food is on the expensive side, it’s also really good. BC and Notre Dame — The Holy War!
As for fun, there’s always something happening at BC. There are tons of sporting events, plays, concerts, and festivals to keep you entertained. The football games are a huge deal—BC’s rivalry with Notre Dame, nicknamed the “Holy War,” is legendary, and tailgating is practically a sport in itself. And if you’re into skiing or rugby (or really any sport), you’ll have plenty of intramural options to get involved in. Plus, BC is home to some solid Division I teams, especially in hockey, lacrosse, and soccer. You’ll even get a day off from classes to cheer on runners at the Boston Marathon as they make their way up “Heartbreak Hill.”
