How To Make a Successful Brown Video Introduction
Curious about the Brown Video Introduction? Here’s how to approach it, from a current Brown student.
The optional Brown Video Introduction is a unique part of Brown’s application, as it takes the place of an interview. However, this makes it an excellent way to add depth to your application and showcase new facets of yourself to the admissions committee. Here are some key things to keep in mind as you craft your Brown Video Introduction.
Tip 1: Start Early And Understand What Brown Wants
- Keep the 2 minute limit in mind. Make sure that your video doesn’t go over!
- Make sure your video is in landscape orientation (horizontal).
- The sky is the limit, but don’t feel pressured to create a formal, complex video introduction.
- As the Brown website states, the only requirement is that “Your video should begin with you in front of the camera saying, “Hi, my name is [insert name] from [high school].””. After that, anything is fair game!
- As listed on the Brown admissions website, the video is not evaluated based on production quality.
- If your editing skills are basic, don’t stress! My skills were incredibly basic, but with the help of beginners’ software such as IMovie and Clipchamp, I was able to edit my video. I also downloaded free copyright-free music from the internet and used it as background music.
Tip 2: Experiment With Video Editing Tools That Work For You 🎥✨🎬
- CapCut: Mobile magic! Perfect for creating awesome social media content right from your phone. CapCut seems to be really easy to use and friends sing its praises!
- Adobe Premiere Pro: The go-to for pros! It’s packed with features, but it might take a bit to master. It’s tougher to learn than CapCut or ClipChamp.
- Final Cut Pro: Mac users, rejoice! This one’s super powerful and makes your videos look slick.
- Apple iMovie: If you’re on a Mac, this is your best friend. Simple, free, and great for quick edits!
- Clipchamp: Web-based and super easy to use! Perfect for quick edits without any downloads.
Tip 3: Develop A Story To Stand Out in the Brown Video Introduction
Craft a story. Think about what you feel hasn’t been showcased on your application thus far. Remember that this is an opportunity to add dimensions to your application! If you have trouble coming up with a topic for your video, take a look at Brown’s website, which lists various sample topics.
Tip 4: Review Other Brown University Video Portfolios For Inspiration
Take a look at sample video introductions from previous successful students for inspiration. These are great resources, and can give you a sense of what has worked in the past. Personally, after crafting a story and deciding on which facets of my life I wanted to showcase, I looked through my camera roll for photos to edit into my video. You’re welcome to combine preexisting content as well as shoot new content for your video introduction!

Tip 5: How To Submit Your Video
If you’re planning to submit that awesome video introduction, here’s when you need to have it in:
- Early Decision? Get your video in by November 4. That’s right around the corner, so get those creative juices flowing!
- Regular Decision? You’ve got a bit more time—your video is due by January 6. Plenty of time to perfect your masterpiece!
And remember, if you’re super eager and want to submit your video right after you apply, you can do that right after you receive your application acknowledgment email. That’s when you’ll get your login info for the Applicant Portal.
Tip 6: Is the Brown Video Introduction Really Optional?
So, is the Brown University video really optional? Well, technically, yes! You can choose to skip it if you want. But here’s the scoop: while it’s labeled as optional, if you’re serious about standing out in the application pool, you might want to think twice about that option.
With over 50,000 applicants vying for a spot at Brown, submitting the video can really help you shine! It’s a fun way to show off your personality and interests beyond what’s written on paper. Plus, it gives the admissions team a chance to see the real you—your voice, your stories, and all those quirky things that make you unique!
So, while you can totally go without it, most competitive applicants are treating it like a must-do. After all, who wouldn’t want to add a little extra sparkle to their application? ✨ If you’ve got something cool to share, go for it!
All in all, the Brown Video Introduction is a great way to showcase your personality to the admissions committee and add to your application. Good luck!
